Duck Search Training Weekend
September 4-5, 2010
Brush Dale Event Calendar
Register soon! Only 11 spots left!
The purpose of this weekend is to train our dogs to independently search for and retrieve downed ducks in a variety of duck hunting locations. We will train at four (4) different sites in these public migratory waterfowel sanctuaries, located within minutes of Brush Dale: The training sites are beautiful wetland and marsh areas that will provide your dog with the opportunity to search a variety of waterfowel habitats and cover. If your dog has yet to set foot in a marsh, this will be a great opportunity to learn a duck search training method that will work well for you and your dog. If your dog is an experienced duck hunter, this intensive training weekend will help him/her learn to search well in new locations.
We will split up into four (4) groups, with each group rotating to a new site each half-day (8AM-Noon and 1PM-5PM). Attendance is limited to sixteen (16) dogs in order to give all dogs maximum time in the water.
Experienced handlers will be available to share their training techniques and assist with training. We will have a brief question-and-answer session each morning, led by Howard Brewer, trainer and VHDF judge, then split up into our groups and head out to the training sites.
Train all day Saturday and Sunday, September 4th and 5th, or as much time as you can spend. Cost for training will be $36.50/half-day/dog (e.g. $146/dog for the full weekend), which is at-cost. Shared accommodations at Brush Dale, in the VIP Lodge and Bellevue Apartment, are free on a first-come, first-served basis.* You will be on your own for breakfasts. Lunches and Saturday dinner will be catered at Brush Dale, with attendees paying only for the cost of the meals. Our caterer is fantastic! BYOB. You may alternatively stay at a local hotel, and/or eat at local restaurants.
You will be provided with 3 mallard ducks per dog for each half-day you train. Extra ducks will be available for $10.50/each. Kayaks will be provided at the training sites. Bring your own neon duct tape (available at Walmart). Guns are prohibited at the National site, and live rounds are not permitted at the Green Island or Big Mill sites.
Questions? Email michelle@brushdale.com or call Michelle at 563.495.4600.
* We ask that you contribute a few dollars to a housekeeping kitty to cover the cost of having the rooms cleaned before and after the event.
Note: Iowa Preserve Hunting Season, which runs September 1st to March 31st, will be open both before and after the Training Weekend. You may reserve additional half-day or full-day hunts, or utilize our training grounds, in conjunction with the Training Weekend. Regular hunting/training package and lodging pricing will apply.
